Where we work
Inter-United serves locally and globally. We have programs within the United States to serve our partners worldwide. Three countries that we have developed full programs within are Haiti, Kenya and China.
Geographically, it's hard to believe the western hemisphere is home to one of the poorest nations in the world. Less than 2,000 miles from the U.S. rests Haiti, a country with a tragic history of poverty and corruption.
Inter-United has traveled to Haiti for many years with a mission to love and serve its people. The teams traveling there are hosted at the Happy House by Ed Lockett Jr., a Georgia native who has lived in Haiti for over 20 years. Apart from playing soccer and putting on clinics with the locals in Haiti, Inter-United travels to schools, hospitals, churches, and local neighborhoods to pass out supplies, food, and spread love to the Haitian people. Ed has opened, and currently funds, five schools where each student is guaranteed at least one meal per day. Ed and Inter-United are currently looking for property to expand the capacity of the Happy House. Our goal is to create a community home and training center for the Haitians and volunteers alike.
In Nairobi, Kenya we have established a partnership with one of our dear friends, Nelly Kagoro. She works with Raggamuffin as the head of the Ragga' Kenya division. We support her mission and that of Raggamuffin's to ethically source handmade goods and change the lives of artisans worldwide. The culture of the business is to provide a way of income as well as skills and knowledge to allow the women in the slums of Kenya an opportunity for hope.
Nelly's teachings enables these women to propel themselves in whatever avenue they pursue. The skills they acquire will not only be used while working with Raggamuffin, but can be utilized towards their own venture and iU encourages their exploration. We love visiting these amazing women and serving and encouraging them in any way possible.
On Saturday's, Nelly puts on a Bible School for any children in the area to attend. She provides food and fellowship. Attendance is anywhere from 30-60 kids every week. She says the youth inspires her to love and continue to reach out to her community. Kenya is a special place to iU, and remains close at heart. Inter-United has aspirations of setting up an iU Academy where children have the opportunity to come and learn English as well as other skills sets to aide in their education journey. Knowledge will always remain a top priority to us.
Since 2006, Inter-United (iU) has been traveling to the Yunnan Province. Our goal remains the same today as it did then: to bring friendship to the nations through our love of soccer and music.
It began with 20 IUS Club members- including trainers and players- who traveled to China during their Christmas break with the vision of taking the love of soccer around the world. In addition to soccer, music was a part of the trip. Some members of the team formed the iU band and performed nightly concerts in different areas of the cities visited.
During the first trip, the iU band put on a Christmas show for the city of Funing and its local schools. Thousands of locals showed up to celebrate and share their own performances. Two cultures came together to celebrate new friendships that night - a dream come true for the Inter-United community.
The first tour's final stop was at Honghe University in Mengzi. Before leaving, Inter-United and Honghe University signed an agreement to continue their relationship by bringing over 10 of the University’s teachers and players for a three week exchange in the United States during the summer of 2007. Since this first exchange, Inter-United has continued to facilitate cultural exchange programs with Honghe University and our friends at local schools & colleges throughout the Yunnan Province including soccer players, athletic directors, dancers, directors of foreign affairs and work-study students.
Following the first tour in 2006, Inter-United and the iU band have carried out five tours in the Yunnan Province. Our most recent tour was in December 2014. Over 20 members of the Inter-United community traveled together bringing music filled with hope and encouragement to village schools and orphanages. We had the privilege of handing out clothes, shoes and other supplies while spending time loving on our fellow friends throughout seven different cities.
